“Here’s a list of all the 5G phones that were announced or showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in Barcelona”
This year’s Mobile World Congress was all about 5G. Many major smartphone manufacturers showed off their 5G phones or prototypes at the event. In this post, we are going to list down all the 5G phones that have been announced so far and may be available for purchase in the coming months. Some manufacturers such as OnePlus and OPPO did not reveal their 5G devices, but did showcase phones using the technology. Read on to learn about the newly launched 5G smartphones from Huawei, Samsung, LG, Xiaomi and others.
Huawei Mate X
The Huawei Mate X is the world’s first foldable 5G phone and it is an impressive device. The foldable design of the Mate X is much better than that of the Samsung Galaxy Fold. It is also much sleeker, has more features and gives a better, futuristic feel. The device features three display modes – a smartphone mode with a 6.6-inch screen, a tablet mode with an 8-inch display, and a selfie mode with a 6.38-inch display. The phone is powered by the 7nm HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset and uses the Balong 5000 5G chip to connect with 5G networks.
Huawei stated that the phone will be available for purchase in mid-2019 at a price of €2,299 (about Rs 1.8 lakh). That’s quite expensive, but you do get both a foldable device and a 5G phone for the money. The smartphone also gets 8GB of RAM, 512GB of internal storage, a 4,500mAh battery, and a triple-rear camera setup. The 5G chip on this phone is claimed to be much faster than the Snapdragon X50 modem found in other 5G devices.
Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
During the Samsung Galaxy S10 announcement last week, the company also unveiled a 5G variant of the phone. Apart from having 5G support, this variant has a few other distinguishing factors. It is still powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset, but uses the Snapdragon X50 5G modem. Compared to the standard Galaxy S10, the 5G phone in the series has a larger 6.7-inch AMOLED display with the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, a quad-camera setup at the back and a larger 4,500mAh battery. The phone features a maximum of 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G will ship in the second quarter of 2019 and will cost somewhere around $1,500.
LG V50 ThinQ
LG also joined the 5G bandwagon by launching the V50 ThinQ smartphone at Mobile World Congress. It is the successor to the LG V40 ThinQ and features some important upgrades. First and foremost, the phone also uses the Snapdragon X50 5G modem just like most other 5G phones in this list. It is powered by the Snapdragon 855 processor and comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. There’s a triple-rear camera setup at the back, a 6.4-inch QHD+ OLED panel with a notch, a 4,000mAh battery and IP68 rating.
The LG V50 ThinQ will be available later this year with Sprint in the US, but we have no information regarding the pricing.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is a smartphone that was announced last year, but the company has now launched the 5G version of the phone with some improvements. The design remains the same, but the Mi MIX 3 5G now comes with the Snapdragon 855 chipset and the Snapdragon X50 modem. Those are pretty much all the differences between the 5G and non-5G variants.
Xiaomi confirmed that the phone will be available for purchase in May this year for a price of €599 (about Rs 49,000) in Europe. The phone will first launch in Europe and it comes with 6GB RAM, up to 128GB storage, dual-rear and front cameras, and a 3,800mAh battery.
ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G
Chinese manufacturer ZTE also unveiled a 5G capable smartphone called the Axon 10 Pro 5G. However, the company did not reveal a lot of information about the device. The 5G phone will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 processor and will use the Snapdragon X50 modem for the high-speed functionality. We have no idea regarding the price of this phone, but it is expected to arrive in China and Europe in the first half of 2019. It will sport a triple-rear camera setup, a large display with a waterdrop notch, and other modern features.
OnePlus 5G Phone
Although OnePlus did not announce any new smartphones at the Mobile World Congress, it did show a prototype device with the Snapdragon X50 modem and Snapdragon 855 chipset. This is a new device, according to the company, which is why it was enclosed in a protective case. Only part of the screen was visible during the 5G demo. The OnePlus 5G phone is expected to arrive in Q2 2019 in Europe and will be priced under $1,000.
Others
Motorola/Lenovo showcased the Moto 5G mod, which will bring 5G capability to the Moto Z3 smartphone. The mod features the Snapdragon X50 modem paired with the Snapdragon 855 processor and also a 2,000mAh battery. However, the mod was made available earlier this year.
