  • Apple may use triple rear cameras on successors of both iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
  • “The 2019 iPhones might feature triple camera setup in triangular alignment and may include a 3D Time of Flight camera”

Alleged renders of the 2019 Apple iPhones surfaced on the internet back in January, revealing the triple camera module in a triangular alignment. Now, Japanese blog Macotakara, citing the sources from Chinese suppliers, corroborates the information about the cameras. The report states that the design of the upcoming iPhones’ camera module will be similar to that of Huawei Mate 20 camera setup. Moreover, it suggests that contrary to a previous report that said the triple rear camera would be limited to the 2019 iPhone XS Max model, even the iPhone XS successor could get triple rear cameras.

The renders from January show the lens and flash are not laid out symmetrically within the protrusion. The Macotakara report does not comment on the layout of the camera sensors in the bump, so it is uncertain how the lenses will be aligned. The module will also have a hole in it, which might house the rumoured 3D ToF camera.

While it was initially reported that only the high-end iPhone XS Max successor would feature the triple camera system, the new report claims Apple will use the modules on the higher storage variants of the 2019 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch iPhones. This means Apple may differentiate between models and variants on not just their display sizes but also the storage capacities. Presumably, the 64GB variants of the two phones would retain the same dual camera module seen in the current models.

On the same note, the iPhone XR successor will reportedly feature a dual-camera system similar to that of the iPhone X. Apple is expected to announce the 2019 iPhone lineup in September.
