“The Black Shark Helo is a gaming smartphone with liquid cooling tech and top-end spec sheet”
When Nokia launched the N-Gage back in 2003, it defined a niche market that remained almost unexplored until last year. The popular gaming accessories brand – Razer came out with the first mainstream gaming smartphone aptly called the Razer Phone (first impressions). The handset started a wildfire of sorts and we witnessed the launch of multiple gaming smartphones like the nubia Red Magic (first impressions) and ASUS ROG Phone (first impressions).
Xiaomi also hopped on to the bandwagon, acquired a gaming company called Black Shark and launched a gaming smartphone called Black Shark (first impressions). The second-generation Black Shark Helo came soon after. The second generation gaming smartphone from the brand is major overhaul over the original Black Shark. The company has now announced that the lineup will find its way to India soon. The announcement hinted that Helo could be the torchbearer of the Indian debut of the brand. Here is the list of top 6 features of the Xiaomi Black Shark Helo, which should compel you to wait for it if you are looking for a gaming smartphone.
Immersive display panel with 60Hz refresh rate
The original Black Shark was equipped with a 5.99-inch In-Cell display panel with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Black Shark Helo comes with a slightly bigger display measuring 6.01-inches, with an improved AMOLED panel and the same aspect ratio. However, the brand has removed the physical home button / fingerprint scanner on the front to narrow down the bezels. This means the Black Shark Helo offers a better immersive viewing experience while gaming. The company has also equipped the display with HDR support even for games and Intelligent motion compensation for an enhanced gaming experience. The phone also boasts a built-in independent image processing chip which enhances the dark scenes and offers a jitter-free gaming experience.
Flagship processor and 10 gigs of RAM for intense gaming
As a second generation gaming smartphone, the Black Shark Helo flaunts the latest and greatest from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 845 chipset. While the processor is the same as its predecessor, what has changed is the muscle accompanying it. The Black Shark Helo is the world’s first smartphone to come with 10 gigabytes of RAM, which should result in smooth performance delivery while playing intensive games like Fortnite for Android, PUBG and more. The brand is also offering the smartphone in 6GB and 8GB variants with 128GB storage, while the 10GB variant comes with 256GB of storage.
The smartphone also boasts a dedicate Gamer Studio feature, which lets users control various aspects like tweaking the processor, touch, display, network and other parameters for specific games. There is also a SHARK Key slider on the left to toggle, which can improve gaming performance by limiting the background usage. On the software side, the device boots Android 9.0 Pie-based MIUI out of the box.
Liquid cooling for effective thermal efficiency
When a smartphone is as loaded as the Black Shark Helo and is being put through its paces frequently, it’s natural for it to heat up. However, gaming phones are usually equipped with advanced cooling tech to bring the thermal throttle down and Black Shark Helo is no different. The phonemaker has equipped the smartphone with Dual Pipe Liquid Cooling which covers all the essential modules inside the smartphone to keep the thermal throttle in check. The company claims that the cooling technology on the Black Shark Helo has 20 times more cooling efficiency to reduce CPU temperature by up to T12 °Celsius and increase CPU maximum frequency running time by 6x.
A refreshed design that is a subtle nod to gaming devices
While last year’s Black Shark smartphone was every bit a gaming smartphone as far as aesthetics was concerned, there was something amiss. The missing element has been added to the latest Black Shark Helo, which flaunts a metal chassis with glass on both ends. While the Black Shark logo at the back still lights up when booting up the smartphone and for notifications, there are now additional lights. The smartphone gets an RGB LED strip on both sides, giving it a more gaming-focused demeanour. The AI game lighting changes based on the game being played. Further, the 3D glass with condensed ridge line gives the handset a three-dimensional look.
The Black Shark Helo also gets ‘X-style’ unique antenna design with Wi-Fi antenna on the side, for a better network reception. The smartphone also comes with front-firing stereo speakers with dual smart PAs for an enhanced audio experience.
Powerful set of cameras to capture candid moments
It wouldn’t be a flagship grade gaming smartphone without a powerful set of cameras on it. And the Black Shark Helo doesn’t disappoint on this front as well. The smartphone comes with a dual-rear camera setup featuring 20-megapixel primary sensor with a 6P lens, 1.25μm pixel size and f/1.75 aperture size accompanied by a secondary 1μm 12-megapixel camera and LED flash. The rear camera module has been equipped with features like PDAF, low-light enhancement, HDR, Portrait mode and AI-enabled features.
For selfies, the Black Shark Helo gets a 20-megapixel 1μm, f/2.2, 5P lens on the front panel. The selfie camera comes with features like beauty mode, real time beauty enhancements, and portrait mode.
Massive battery for hours of gaming at a stretch
All these loaded tech would come to naught if you are left hunting for the charger after an intense but very short gaming session. After all, the dedicated gaming features, immersive display, powerful configuration, glowing logo and RGB LED on sides are bound to take its toll on the battery life. The company seems to be aware of this – but obviously – and has retained the beefy 4,000mAh battery from the predecessor, which also comes with support for fast charging. Further, the brand has equipped the battery with Intelligent Power Reduction feature to keep battery consumption in check.
No doubt here that the Black Shark Helo is one of the most powerful gaming smartphone in the market at the moment. The handset has been priced at RMB 3,199 (~Rs 34,000) for the base 6GB RAM, 128GB storage option, RMB 3,499 (~Rs 37,000) for 8GB model and RMB 4,199 (~Rs 41,500) for the high-end 10-gig RAM variant. There is no word on the Indian launch at the moment but we can expect it to be sooner than later.
