  • Xiaomi’s foldable phone appears in a video again
  • “Xiaomi’s foldable phone will reportedly cost half of the Samsung’s Galaxy Fold at launch”

Last year, everyone was hyped about the new foldable form-factor in smartphones and MWC 2019 brought to the world stage the very first two models of these bendable devices. Right now, only Samsung and Huawei (soon) will allow potential buyers to pre-order a foldable phone but there are other OEMs who have shown off a foldable phone at least in renders or video. Xiaomi, in particular, gave viewers a detailed first look at its dual-folding phone in January this year via an official source. It’s happened yet again, this time in a much more shorter video.

The video appeared first on Weibo from Xiaomi’s official account and it’s quite clear that the company wants to keep the hype alive surrounding its own foldable device. If you’ve looked at the previous video, you won’t find anything new here in terms of design. It’s the same dual-foldable panel. You might notice the crease on the display and with Xiaomi there will be two of them. As previously reported, Xiaomi’s foldable panel has been developed by Visionox. It’s been an issue with both the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, and in trying a double fold, Xiaomi will be risking even more. It’s also likely that this is just a prototype device and Xiaomi might improve the design to a certain extent in the commercial model.

Now, to be clear, Xiaomi hasn’t been forthcoming about the development of its foldable device. The phase in which the product currently rests isn’t known yet and neither do we have a potential release date. However, reports suggest that a release in the second half of 2019 is possible. A previous report also hinted that Xiaomi’s foldable phone will cost around half that of the Galaxy Fold, which has been priced at $1980 (roughly Rs 1.36 lakhs). If Xiaomi manages to launch it’s phone around $ 1,000 (roughly Rs 69,000) mark, it might be one of the cheapest foldable phones in the market at the time of launch. However, most of this information is based on leaks, so we will have to wait and see what the actual product will bring along.
