“Xiaomi silently dropped MIUI 10 based Pie update plans for Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi S2 (Y2) in China”
After kicking off the Pie based MIUI 10 beta update for the Redmi Note 6 Pro, Redmi 6 Pro and Redmi Note 5 Pro in March, Xiaomi had added the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A to the list of devices that would be getting the Pie update sometime in Q2 2019. Now, it appears the company has dropped the Pie update plans for the Redmi S2 (which is sold as Redmi Y2 in India), Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A without any valid explanation. The company in China has changed the current development status of the Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, and Redmi S2 in the MIUI forum to suspended.
Since the changes were made to the Chinese MIUI forum, it is unclear if the same would apply to the global variants of the Redmi S2 (Redmi Y2), Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A as well. It is also reported that the company might reopen the beta testing for the Redmi Y2 after it fixes internal bugs and hence the update might be delayed. The Redmi Y2 was one of the first devices to get the MIUI 10 update when it was released and it is quite surprising that the company had changed its plans for these phones. Redmi 6 Pro which comes with similar hardware has already received the Pie update with dual VoLTE.
Separately, Xiaomi has scheduled an event in India on April 24th where it is expected to introduce the Redmi Y3 selfie-centric budget smartphone with 32MP snapper on the front. The handset is likely to be an Amazon-exclusive as the e-commerce giant has already put up a promotional banner on the site. We should know more details when the phone launches next week.
