  • Android Authority | Here are the handsets with the best smartphone speakers
  • Razer Phone 2 -- best smartphone speakers

Smartphones have evolved considerably over the last few years in terms of processing power, camera quality, and even design, but one area that arguably hasn't advanced nearly as fast is smartphone speakers.

Most smartphone speakers are not that great, mainly because of their size. However, there are a few handsets available that pay more attention to audio than others, offering stereo sound and even front facing speakers in some cases. Here are the best ones.

Editor's note: We will be updating this list of the handsets with the best smartphone speakers regularly as new devices launch.

    LG G8 ThinQ

LG G8 ThinQ Review against mirror

You won't find a tradition earpiece speaker on the LG G8. Instead, the phone sports what's called a "Crystal Sound OLED," which means that the display serves as the speaker diaphragm. An exciter behind the glass causes it to vibrate in such a way that the display emits the sound. The "Crystal Sound OLED" is paired with a bottom-firing speaker to create two-channel stereo sound when listening to music and watching videos.

The LG G8 is a great phones for music lovers.

In addition to having great smartphone speakers, the LG G8 also sports a headphone jack and a 32-bit HiFi Quad DAC for an improved audio experience with the right headphones. All these things combined make LG's flagship one of the best phones for music lovers you can currently get.

The phone is aimed at high-end users, offering Qualcomm's latest chipset along with a rear dual-camera setup, wireless charging, an IP68 rating, and a large QHD+ display. You can check out the rest of the specs in the table below.

    • Snapdragon 855 chipset
    • 6GB of RAM
    • 128GB of storage, expandable up to 512GB
    • 12MP and 16MP rear cameras, 8MP front camera
    • Non-removable 3,500mAh battery
    • Android 9.0 Pie
    • 151.9 x 71.8 x 8.4mm, 167g

    HTC U12 Plus

    smartphone speakers

The HTC U12 Plus features stereo speakers — called Boombox — that produce great sound quality. They are also super loud and can easily fill up the average room. However, you don't get front-facing speaker as with some previous HTC phones, as one of the speakers is located at the bottom edge.

The HTC U12 Plus has a few other things going for it. These include the Edge Sense feature that allows you to open an app of choice by squeezing the sides of the phone, a good camera, and an eye-catching design. However, the phone also comes with pressure-sensitive power and volume buttons that are just terrible, has below-average battery life, and offers a disappointing software experience.

The phone offers plenty of power, packing the Snapdragon 845 chipset along with 6GB of RAM under the hood. It's also IP68 rated for protection against water and dust, has two selfie cameras, and is available with a transparent backplate.

    Specs

    • 6-inch Super LCD 6 display with 2,880 x 1,140 resolution, 537ppi
    • Snapdragon 845 chipset
    • 6GB of RAM
    • 64/128GB of storage, microSD expansion up to 2TB
    • 12MP and 16MP rear cameras, two 8MP front cameras
    • 3,500mAh battery

    • 156.6 x 73.9 x 8.7mm, 188g

    Razer Phone 2

smartphone speakers on the Razer Phone 2

You'll find two front-facing speakers on the Razer Phone 2 offering exceptional audio quality. In his review of the device, our very own Lanh Nguyen said that "the sound is very evenly balanced, with a good amount of both bass and treble."

    Editor's Pick

The Razer Phone 2 is aimed at gamers, which means it sports high-end specs, a large display, and a big battery. It even features a vapor chamber cooling system to more evenly dissipate heat and reduce thermal throttling for increased performance. There's only 64GB of storage available, which isn't much for a gaming phone, but there is a microSD card slot on board.

This phone isn't for everyone, mainly because of its aggressive and boxy design. But if the quality of smartphone speakers is important to you, the Razer Phone 2 should definitely be on your shortlist.

    Specs

    • 5.72-inch IGZO LCD display with 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, 513ppi
    • Snapdragon 845 chipset
    • 8GB of RAM
    • 64GB of storage, expandable up to 1TB
    • 12MP and 12MP rear cameras, 8MP front camera
    • Non-removable 4,000mAh battery
    • Android 9.0 Pie
    • 158.5 x 79 x 8.5mm, 220g

    Asus ROG Phone

    Asus ROG Phone display

The Asus ROG phone has dual front-facing stereo speakers with a smart amplifier. The setup provides a clear, crisp audio experience. Like the Razer Phone 2, the ROG Phone is aimed at gamers. It sports an attractive design that stands out from the crowd, partly due to the customizable RGB logo at the back.

You can get the Asus ROG Phone with a range of accessories.

The handset packs high-end specs along with a large battery and comes with a range of accessories that improve the gaming experience. Among these is a TwinView handheld dock with a secondary display and 6,000mAh battery. The ROG Phone also has a performance mode that raises the minimum clock speed and restricts tasks to the four fastest cores.

Other specs and features of the devices include a rear dual-camera setup, up to 512GB of storage, and a 6-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate. You can check out the pricing by clicking the button below.

    Samsung Galaxy S10 series

    Samsung Galaxy S10e, S10, S10 Plus

The Galaxy S10 phones have powerful smartphone speakers on board. All three devices — the Galaxy S10 Plus, S10, and S10e — sport two stereo speakers that were tuned by AKG and support Dolby Atmos sound. They get pretty loud and can easily fill up a room.

In terms of specs and features, the Plus model offers the most out of the three phones. You get the largest display, the biggest battery, and two front-facing cameras. Most of the other specifications are the same as those you get with the regular model. Both sport the same chipset, feature the same rear camera setup, and have an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, only has two cameras at the back and comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It's the smallest and cheapest phone in the lineup, but it is still a great option for demanding users.
