Google announces swipeable widgets for Wear OS called ‘Tiles’

Google I/O 2019 is set to take place from May 7th to May 10th in Mountain View, California. The company is expected to introduce Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones, Android Q and make hardware related announcements. Now, ahead of the event, Google announced a new Wear OS feature dubbed as Tiles, which are glanceable widgets that can be accessed by swiping from left to right on the watch-face. Users can get quick access to Assistant, Fit Goals, notifications, quick settings, and more with these Tiles.

These Tiles are user customisable and can include Google Fit goals, calendar events, weather forecasts, heart rate, Google News headlines, and timer countdown. There is a dot at the top of each screen indicating the number of Tiles you have set, and an app icon appears briefly as you swipe to a new screen. Touching and holding on any of the screens brings up the editor UI to tweak the arrangement of the Tiles and an option to add more. Users can also customise the same through the Wear OS companion app as well.

Currently, only Google’s own apps support Tiles, but the company says that it’ll be adding more over time. The company mentioned the Tiles feature would be rolling out over the next month to Wear OS devices. However, the functionality and certain elements will vary by phone OS, watch, and country. Google will be showing off the Tiles feature in action at the I/O 2019 event next week.
