“The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are Google’s new mid-range smartphones with the same camera hardware as the flagship Pixel 3 series”
Google’s latest Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL (review) are the company’s attempt at making a mid-range smartphone for masses. While they are pretty expensive for a market like India, they do offer a flagship-class photography experience. But there were a couple of things about the Pixel 3a series that didn’t come to light until recently. Not only are the two smartphones stuck with the March 2019 security patch but they won’t get Android Q Beta support until next month.
Google has announced that the April and May security patches will start rolling out to Pixel 3a series users from June 3rd onwards. As for the Android Q Beta 3, the company says the handsets will become eligible for the latest version of Google’s mobile OS in June — there’s no exact date at the moment. It’s a bit odd to see Made by Google devices running late on software updates.
However, if you are eager to try Android Q Beta 3 on the Pixel 3a and 3a XL, you can flash it manually with flashing a factory image or sideloading an OTA image. Otherwise, wait for Google to enable the support and then install via the opt-in Beta Program from Android Developers website. Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, and the original Pixel and Pixel XL users can enrol for the beta program via the website. Since the software is in the beta, early adopters may face several bugs and issues.
Coming back to Pixel 3a and 3a XL smartphones, they were launched earlier this month at Google’s I/O 2019 conference and are available for sale in the country at starting price of Rs 39,999. The handsets come with the same camera hardware, which is a 12.2-megapixel sensor on the rear and 8-megapixel shooter on the front, as the flagship Pixel 3 and 3XL smartphones. Both the phones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage under the hood. While the Pixel 3a sports a 5.6-inch display and 3,000mAh battery, the Pixel 3a XL features a slightly bigger 6-inch display and 3,700mAh battery.
