There have been a few Android TV developments as of late and now Google is announcing some of their own. The company has announced new features that will roll out first in India and will be welcomed by anyone with limits on their Internet data. Google is bringing Data Saver to Android TV. Also, the Files by Google app is getting Chromecast support.
In a blog post, Google says that Android TV is quickly gaining popularity in India, which is evidenced by the fact that Motorola, Xiaomi, and OnePlus are all launching or planning to launch new products in the country this month. Google claims there are millions of monthly users of Android TV across the country, but one problem is that not everyone has WiFi at home, so a lot of people resort to connecting through mobile hotspots. Streaming content on the big screen via mobile data can quickly eat through data, not to mention that it might not be fast enough for HD content, which is why Google is rolling out Data Saver mode for Android TV users in the country.

Data Saver for Android TV can reduce data usage on mobile connections and allow the owner to stream up to 3 times longer. There are also Data Alerts built-in to help people monitor how much data they are using while watching TV (it will pop up right on the screen). Lastly, a Hotspot Guide will make it easy to set up your TV with a mobile hotspot connection. These Android TV features will be rolling out over the coming weeks in India starting with TVs from Xiaomi, TCL, and MarQ by Flipkart. The global rollout will come later.
Now on to the Files app (formerly Files Go), Google is adding Chromecast support. This is something that we spotted earlier this month in an APK teardown. This allows people to watch downloaded content from their phone on the TV without using mobile data. You can try out this functionality right now on the beta channel for the Files app. We love these new features and they should be very useful for people who monitor their data usage closely.
