  • Tech – Metro | O2 launches 5G phone coverage in six UK cities
  • LONDON, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 06: The company logo is seen through the window of an o2 mobile network store on December 06, 2018 in London, England. The mobile network had severe technical issues which resulted in millions of customers left without data access on their devices for over 24 hours. The telecommunications company reported that the system was returned to full operation by 3.30am on Friday morning but was continuing to monitor the situation. (Photo by Leon Neal/Getty Images)

O2 has rolled out its 5G network today, revealing a range of new tariffs alongside an exclusive partnership with Facebook's Oculus and MelodyVR.

Coverage is currently limited to Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, London and Slough, with the network initially switching 5G on prime locations such as London's Waterloo and Kings Cross stations.

However, O2 aims to be live in a total of 20 towns and cities by the end of the year and plans to provide 5G to 50 cities by summer 2020.

'Today is a significant moment for our customers and our business as we switch on the O2 5G network,' Telefónica UK CEO Mark Evans said. 'We're launching with a range of tariffs that make it easy and fair for customers to access 5G, with flexible plans that cost no more than 4G.'

'We're also switching on 5G in important parts of towns and cities first, places where it will benefit customers and businesses most,' he added.

'I believe 5G is going to revolutionise the way people and businesses use mobile connectivity, unlocking huge possibilities for our economy and society.'

He concluded: 'No one in the country has all the answers today, but I'm excited about getting it into the hands of our customers and working with leading partners to help shape the future of 5G for the next generation.'

5G will available to all O2 customers and, from today, new customers are being offered 5G plans in the same price point as current 4G options.

The company has continued its focus on delivering live music experiences to its customers by unveiling a new partnership with Oculus and MelodyVR as part of the 5th Generation of Music bundle.

Including a 12 months subscription to MelodyVR and an Oculus Go virtual reality headset, music lovers can enjoy some of the biggest live performances in the world from through their headset or mobile phone.

In order to reap the benefits of 5G, customers must have a 5G enabled mobile phone. O2 currently offers four 5G-enabled devices: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G; Samsung Galaxy Note10+ 5G; Samsung Galaxy A90 (5G); and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G.

The company has also launched 5G business tariffs to suit businesses of every size, whatever their data requirements.

'We want the UK to be a global leader in 5G and for the majority of the population to have access to a 5G signal by 2027,' Digital Minister Matt Warman explains.

'This investment by O2 is a great step forward in rolling out the technology across our home nations, providing world-class infrastructure to help us grow our economy and compete strongly.'

5G technology is the next generation of mobile network and is expected to offer internet speeds several times that of current generation 4G.

Fellow operators EE and Vodafone have also launched 5G networks in parts of the UK this year.
