  • Xda-Developers | Google App 10.74.6 hints at the Pixel 4’s new Assistant coming to Canada, the UK, and Singapore
  • At Google I/O 2019 earlier this year, the company first showcased the new faster Google Assistant. Then, over the last couple of months we saw numerous leaks that gave us a clearer picture of what the company had planned for its virtual assistant. Most recently, we saw a new compact UI for setting reminders with the Assistant. Now, Google has finally released the next-gen Google Assistant with the launch of its Pixel 4 series, but sadly the updated Assistant only works in the US. However, a teardown of the latest update to the Google app suggests that the Assistant will make its way to other regions, including Canada, the UK, and Singapore.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

New strings discovered in version 10.74.6 of the Google app highlights prompts which state that the Google Assistant is coming soon to Canada, the UK and Singapore. Additionally, the prompts also reveal that the Assistant will require an internet connection to work in these regions and the US English version is shown for demonstration purposes only.

<string name="nga_retail_mode_language_disclaimer_en_CA">Coming soon in Canada. See g.co/assistant/languages for available languages. Internet connection required. US English version shown for demonstration purposes only.</string> <string name="nga_retail_mode_language_disclaimer_en_GB_SG">Coming soon in the UK and Singapore. See g.co/assistant/languages for available languages. Internet connection required. US English version shown for demonstration purposes only.</string>

Furthermore, a few new strings also hint at the Raise to Talk feature. The feature will allow users to raise their devices to their face to talk to the Assistant, without requiring them to say OK Google first. We've previously seen hints of this feature in older versions of the Google app. Once implemented, this feature will make interacting with the Assistant even more seamless and intuitive.

<string name="nga_dynamic_android_settings_raise_to_talk_summary">Hold your phone to your face to talk to your Assistant</string> <string name="nga_dynamic_android_settings_raise_to_talk_title">Lift to talk</string> <string name="nga_opt_in_raise_to_talk_description">Simply raise your phone and ask the Assistant without the need of Saying "OK Google"</string> <string name="nga_opt_in_raise_to_talk_title">Raise to talk</string>
