New Android devices are being released every week and Google constantly tries to keep up with adding them to the list of devices that support Google Play Services for AR. Formerly called ARCore, Google Play Services for AR doesn't require any dedicated hardware like Project Tango, but Google still needs to manually whitelist devices to work with it. This week, the Samsung Galaxy Fold, OnePlus 7T, and OnePlus 7T Pro were added.

Google works with OEMs to create custom calibration profiles for each device. Every device has a different camera and sensor setup, so getting the calibration correct is very important for making the AR experience feel realistic. The good news, at least if you care about ARCore, is it usually doesn't take long for popular devices to gain support. The OnePlus 7T/7T Pro were just made available, and the Galaxy Fold also recently went on sale.

Google Play Services for AR (or ARCore) should show up on these devices automatically if they aren't already preloaded. There are a number of AR apps to try out once you get it. Google Maps has a new "Live View" mode, for example, or you can take advantage of Pokémon GO's "AR+" mode as well. AR can be a lot of fun and all you need is a smartphone.
