  • OnePlus 8 120Hz display technology expected to be unveiled on January 13th
  • “While OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are expected to ship with the Snapdragon 865 SoC with 5G support, the OnePlus 8 Lite could come with last year’s Snapdragon 855 SoC”

OnePlus has sent out media invites for an event scheduled on January 13th in China at Shenzhen B.PARK bloom garden. The company will be introducing its new 2020 screen technology. While it didn’t reveal any details regarding the event, rumours suggest that it could unveil a 120Hz refresh rate panel at the event. To recall, OnePlus was one of the early movers to adapt the 90Hz refresh rate last year with OnePlus 7 Pro. This means the upcoming OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro might ship with a 120Hz refresh rate, which would be a worthy upgrade from the OnePlus 7-series. Nothing much is known about the new 120Hz panel yet, but we should learn more information on Monday.

Separately, OnePlus Concept One was unveiled at the CES 2020, and the key highlight of the concept phone is that it rocks cameras that can be hidden, thanks to the electrochromic glass technology. This colour-shifting technology changes the transparency when the camera is turned on and shows the camera lenses. OnePlus claims that Concept One takes mere 0.7s for the glass to transition from opaque to transparent. The company has designed this invisible camera tech in partnership with motorsport company McLaren.

As for the OnePlus 8 series, the lineup is tipped to launch in Q2 2020 and expected to include three models — OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8 Lite. The high-end models are expected to ship with the Snapdragon 865 SoC with 5G support, while the OnePlus 8 Lite could come with last-year’s Snapdragon 855 SoC. The leaked renders suggest the phones would adopt a punch-hole design. While the OnePlus 8 Pro has been tipped to have a quad-camera setup at the back, the standard OnePlus 8 could get a vertically-arranged triple camera module. They are likely to run the latest Android 10 OS out of the box.
