After a long wait and multiple leaks, the free-to-play Call of Duty battle royale game, called Warzone, is now available. Warzone takes everything you know and love about Call of Duty and adds the fun and competitiveness of the battle royale genre on top.
Activision Jumps on the Battle Royale Bandwagon
Battle royale games are immensely popular. Games such as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Fortnite, and Apex Legends all boast millions of players. This is partly as they're all free-to-play, with players able to choose whether to buy anything.
There have been multiple rumors about a Call of Duty battle royale game, as Activision would be mad not to jump on the bandwagon. Now, on the Activision Games Blog, the company has finally revealed all, releasing Call of Duty: Warzone as a free-to-play game.
How to Play Call of Duty: Warzone
Warzone is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you already own Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you should find Warzone in the main menu. Otherwise, you'll have to look for it on Battle.net (PC), the PlayStation Store (PS4), or the Microsoft Store (Xbox One).
The size of the Warzone download will differ depending on whether you own a copy of Modern Warfare. Either way, you can download Warzone for free. As well as being free-to-play, Call of Duty: Warzone is cross-platform, meaning everyone can play together.
There are two game modes in Warzone: Battle Royale and Plunder. Battle Royale sees teams of three players competing with up to 150 players to be the last squad standing. Plunder is all about collecting Cash by looting, stealing, and completing Contracts.
This all takes place across a huge map called Verdansk, which is an expansive city with multiple zones and points of interest. There are multiple weapons and vehicles to use to stay alive as the map gets smaller, forcing the survivors into combat.
How to Avoid Spending Money Playing Warzone
Call of Duty: Warzone will feel familiar to anyone who has previously played a battle royale game. Except Warzone has the look and feel of Call of Duty. You'll probably know whether this is the game for you after watching the violent and bloody trailer.
One thing to bear in mind is that while Warzone is free-to-play, there are ways to spend money in the game. So, whether you're an adult lacking willpower, or the parent of a kid likely to play Warzone, take note of the ways video games trick you into spending money.
