  • Motorola Edge+ vs Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: battle of the premium flagships
  • Motorola has launched the Motorola Edge+ flagship smartphone in India, bringing one of the most powerful devices in the world to the country. The new Edge+ offers everything a power user looks for, from a beautiful and innovative display to crazy-fast performance and from a best-in-class camera to a long-lasting battery. These features, and so many more, make the Motorola Edge+ the flagship to buy in 2020, ahead of so many contenders that are vying for the title of the ultimate smartphone of the year. In fact, the fully loaded Galaxy S20 Ultra is one of the few handsets that can actually be called a competitor to the Edge+, but even then, the Motorola device is a more enticing prospect than the Samsung model. Here’s a look at all the reasons that the Motorola Edge+ is a better deal than even the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Motorola Edge+ vs Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

    Display

Both the Motorola Edge+ and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra are flagships that go all-out in their pursuit of delivering an unparalleled user experience. The two smartphones, of course, offer the best hardware available in the market today as well as a premium user experience. However, there are several differences between them, which distinguish the two handsets. And the differences highlight how the Motorola Edge+ is a smartphone that is made keeping everything demand of the user in mind, such as design, display quality, battery life, user interface, performance and gaming, and so much more.

Starting with the display, Motorola has truly outdone itself with its new Endless Edge display that features curves nearly 90-degrees on both sides of the huge 6.7-inch OLED panel. This makes the display experience more immersive than anything else offered in the market today and the Red Dot Award-winning design will turn heads wherever you go. But the Endless Edges are about so much more than just design – you can navigate the phone, access shortcuts, open recent apps, check notifications by simply swiping up/ down or tapping the curved edges. And if you are a gamer, you will simply love the two on-screen buttons that appear on the top edge when you play games! And despite all these functionalities, the Endless Edges are optimised to ignore accidental touches, so your user experience won’t be affected adversely. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, on the other hand, has a 2.5D curved design, which is considered flat for all intents and purposes and much less noticeable than what you get on the Motorola Edge+.

But the wonderful display experience doesn’t end at the striking Endless Edge design. The Motorola Edge+ display offers a few more features that set it apart from the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. First is the 93 percent screen-to-body ratio of the Motorola model, which allows it to give the user more display real estate in a relatively smaller body; compared to this, the Samsung handset offers screen-to-body ratio of just less than 90 percent. Then there’s the aspect ratio – the Edge+ has a 21:9 aspect ratio compared to the 20:9 aspect ratio of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. This makes the former easier to hold for the users than the latter since it is not as wide, making one-hand usage a breeze.

And then there’s the refresh rate. Motorola has opted for a 90Hz display with full-HD+ (1,080 x 2,340 pixels) resolution, whereas the Samsung model gets a 120Hz panel with QHD+ (1,440 x 3,200 pixels) resolution. At first look, it may seem the Galaxy S20 Ultra has the edge here, but you will be surprised to know that the smartphone is limited to just 60Hz refresh rate at QHD+ resolution – if you want to use 120Hz refresh rate, then you need to bring the resolution down to full-HD+, the same as that of the Motorola handset! However, the Edge+ has an edge on this level playing field since its 90Hz OLED panel is able to deliver a smoother user experience and transitions without becoming the battery-guzzler that a 120Hz screen can be. This makes the Motorola Edge+ the smartphone that easily delivers a superior display experience and still manages to conserve battery better.

    Performance

Motorola Edge+ is powered by the 5G-capable Snapdragon 865, the latest and greatest chipset from Qualcomm. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra in India comes with the 4G LTE-only Exynos 990 SoC. Several industry benchmarks have consistently showed that the Snapdragon 865 is at least 4-5 percent better than the Exynos 990. Add the 12GB DDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage with Turbo Write sequential writing to the mix and you get a smartphone that can not only handle all the apps and games you throw its way but also is twice as fast in storing the data. And that’s not all! The Motorola handset comes with 256GB storage on board, twice as much as the 128GB offered by the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Clearly, the Edge+ is a clear winner when performance is the criterion.

    Cameras

Both the Edge+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra come with 108MP primary cameras, but the former (16MP) has a bigger sensor to capture ultra-wide-angle and macro shots than the latter (12MP), giving it a huge edge. Moreover, the Motorola phone comes with the industry-leading image stabilisation tech developed by Sweden-based Imint Image Intelligence to deliver DSLR-grade photos and videos. Other features that put the quad-sensor setup of the Motorola Edge+ (108MP + 8MP + 16MP + 3D ToF) in a league of its own are dual OIS (in the primary and telephoto sensors), the laser autofocus, and AI improvements. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra gets an edge on the selfie front thanks to the 40MP sensor, though the Edge+ is certainly no slouch in this department either, thanks to its 25MP selfie shooter.

    Software

For years, Motorola phones have offered clean, near-stock Android experience to users, a tradition that continues with the Edge+. The new smartphone comes with zero bloatware so that your device isn’t stuffed with apps that you will never even open but are unable to delete. Due to the near-stock nature of Android 10 on Motorola Edge+, users get a skin that is light and easy to navigate. Of course, all the customisations that make Android a treat for fans of personalisation are still there, so you can give the software your own look with just a few taps. The smartphone also comes with Gametime, which can automatically block any notifications or calls while you are gaming. Moreover, Motorola has confirmed the Edge+ will get two more Android versions over the next couple of years.

Compared to the light, clean, and near-stock Android experience of the Motorola Edge+, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has a heavily skinned UI that is replete with duplicate apps that you will probably never use.

    Audio, network speeds, and more

As video streaming and gaming have gained traction in the last couple of years, Motorola has made sure the Edge+ is a device that manages all of these needs without skipping a beat. The smartphone’s large display sports a punch-hole design that ensures the content you are watching isn’t obstructed by a huge notch. The stereo speakers on the smartphone has been tuned by Waves, the winner of a Technical Grammy Award, to deliver the loudest, most powerful audio. The beloved 3.5mm audio jack is here too, making the Motorola handset the only flagship to offer this feature. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra offers stereo speakers tuned by AKG and does not have a 3.5mm audio jack.

For online gamers, Edge+ offers ultra-fast 5G speeds of over 4Gbps and blazing-fast 4G LTE at 2Gbps due to the 8CC (eight component carriers) Motorola has used in the smartphone, and congestion-free Wi-Fi 6 connectivity options. All these combine to deliver an uninterrupted gaming experience wherever you are, whether at home or on the go! Of course, Gametime will cut all distractions and the Endless Edge will give you extra buttons on the top to make sure you are never short of weapons and moves in the most competitive PUBG battles.

Why OnePlus 8 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10 are not really competition for Motorola Edge+

One look at the hardware, software, design, and features of the Motorola Edge+ will tell you that it is easily among the best devices in the market today. For that reason, there is little to support the argument that handsets like OnePlus 8 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10 can compete with the new Motorola smartphone. Let’s show you how.

The OnePlus 8 Pro has a 48MP primary camera, which is a far cry from what true flagships offer in 2020. In fact, it pales in comparison to the 108MP sensor of the Edge+, which offers DSLR-like photography and 6K video recording. Then there’s the display of the OnePlus model – neither is it as curved as the near-90-degree Endless Edge nor does it offer 93 percent screen-to-body ratio for higher display real estate on the fascia. The battery on the 8 Pro is just 4,510mAh, making it around 10 percent smaller than the 5,000mAh cell on the Edge+. Features such as the Waves-tuned audio, faster data speeds, and eye-catching design also make the Motorola Edge+ a smartphone that is a league apart from the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Similarly, Xiaomi Mi 10 lacks a lot of features that make the Motorola Edge+ the obvious choice between the two. For one, Motorola prides itself with its ad-free, bloatware-free, and clean UI, which is in stark contrast to the heavily skinned UI of Mi 10 that comes with many apps you cannot delete. Then, like the OnePlus device, the Xiaomi model also doesn’t have a display whose curve is as pronounced as that of the Endless Edge panel. Moreover, its screen-to-body ratio doesn’t even touch 90 percent, meaning thicker relatively bezels!

There would be many who think all 108MP camera systems are designed alike, but Motorola Edge+ proves just how superior its quad-sensor setup is compared to the Mi 10’s. In the quad-camera setup of Mi10, you actually have two sensors which are just 2MP.

While there is an 8MP telephoto lens with OIS of the Edge+, the Xiaomi model doesn’t have a telephoto zoom lens at all! Moreover, the Motorola flagship uses a 16MP sensor for ultra-wide and macro shots, which delivers much better and detailed results than the 13MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro lenses of the Mi 10.

When it comes to performance, the Mi 10 tops out at just 8GB RAM, which seems paltry in comparison to the 12GB RAM offered by the Edge+. Of course, the Xiaomi smartphone offers nothing close to the Imint image stabilization technology that the Edge+ boasts of. The bigger 4,780mAh battery, missing 3.5mm audio jack, lack of Waves-tuned speakers, and the absence of a feature such as Gametime just underline how underwhelming the user experience can be on the Motorola Edge+.

    Motorola Edge+ price

With the hardware, design, performance, user interface, and features that the Motorola Edge+ offers, it isn’t a surprise this smartphone towers over the competition. It is priced quite competitively at Rs 74,999, a difference of Rs 23,000 compared to the more expensive Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra (Rs 97,999). But it gets even better – buyers who purchase the Edge+ using an ICICI Bank credit card will get a Rs 7,500 flat discount (online)/ cashback (offline), bringing down the flagship’s effective price down to just Rs 67,499! That price tag is simply astounding for a smartphone that is so powerful, looks so elegant, and filled to the brim with features you will covet. You can pre-book the Motorola Edge+ starting today on Flipkart or at leading offline retail stores, with sales expected to start on May 26th!
