  • Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 announced, will support 100W+ fast charging on flagship phones
  • Highlights
    • Quick Charge 5 has been announced by Qualcomm
    • The new solution is 70 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 4
    • Quick Charge 5-supported high-end phones are expected to launch in Q3 2020

Qualcomm Technologies has announced the Quick Charge 5.0 commercial fast-charging technology for Android devices. The chipmaker claims it is the world’s first commercially viable fast charging platform to support more than 100W charging on a smartphone. It is said to charge a 2,750mAh battery from 0 to 50 percent in just five minutes and completely up to 100 percent in just 15 minutes. The charging technology uses Qualcomm’s Battery Saver and new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology to help extend the battery life cycle.

Quick Charge 5 is 70 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 4 and offers 10 times the power delivery of Quick Charge 1, Qualcomm said in its press release. It supports 2S batteries and 20 volts of power delivery. The new charging technology incorporates 12 separate voltage: current and temperature protections, including USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V and external power controls beyond 30V. Qualcomm says that it functions 10-degrees Celsius cooler than Quick Charge 4 and enables Dual/Triple Charge technology, adaptive input voltage, and INOV4.

Qualcomm Technologies is also introducing the newest power management ICs (PMIC), Qualcomm SMB1396 and SMB1398 for optimal Quick Charge 5 performance. These support 1SnP and 2SnP batteries, wired and wireless input paths, adaptive operation based on the power source, and scalability. Qualcomm SMB1396 and SMB1398 aim to provide maximum efficiency above 98 percent and support higher than 20V input voltage operation to accommodate the highest power levels from both wireless and wired power sources.

Qualcomm says Quick Charge 5 will be part of commercial premium phones powered by Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and upcoming high-end Snapdragon platforms starting in Q3 2020.
