Xiaomi officially announced its next lineup of Redmi devices to the Nigerian market yesterday which it dubbed “entry-level smartphones but
I tell you what, these devices are nowhere near ordinary!
The Redmi 9, Redmi 9A and Redmi 9C smartphones which is a bit toned down version of the Redmi Note 9 devices and successor to the Redmi 8 announced last year all packs impressive specs whilst doing it job pretty fine.
Also, it is worth recalling this is a company that only made the leap into the Nigerian smartphone market space, but so far has incredibly worn the heart of Nigerians if not really taking occupancy with its premium-budget yet affordable devices.
The Redmi 9, Redmi 9A, and Redmi 9C are sold at different prices, but all of them are between N41, 900 – N66, 900 and offer good value for money.
Marketing Director, Mr. SomoyeHabeeb speaking during the launch event dully acknowledges that the “Xiaomi Redmi 9 comes in as a smartphone intended to pacify enthusiasts who cannot afford the Redmi Note 9 series. It offers a cheaper price tag, which can be seen as a strategy to reach customers with a lower budget.”
So, too much of the post-launch rituals over; here comes the new arrivals then
Given that they carry different prices(which we’ll talk about later) and they are all devices released by Xiaomi, you probably understood that don’t REALLY offer same specifications.
But you don’t really have to worry about which one to buy or worth spending more money.
Just hang on with me here
Redmi 9 Specifications and Features
The Redmi 9 features a 6.53” FHD+ Display (2340 x 1080 pixels) with a waterdrop notch cutout for the selfie camera. The display is topped with a layer of Gorilla Glass 3 protection with the phone measuring 9.1mm thick and weighs at 198 grams.
The Redmi 9 has the impressive MediaTekHelio G80 chipset running under the hood with an octa-core CPU and Mali-G52 GPU and runs on MIUI 12 which is based on Android 10. This is paired with up to 4GB RAM starting option and up to 64GB storage options to choose from. There’s also an option to increase the phone’s storage further by using microSD cards of up to 512GB.
Moving on, the camera department is where the real teaser is. There is a rear quad-camera setup that consists of a primary 13MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 118-degree field-of-view, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies, useres will have to make do with an 8MP selfie camera housed within the waterdrop notch cutout.
Furthermore, the Redmi 9 offers a fingerprint sensor on the back for security measures and the likes and also comes with a 5,020mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging out-of-the-box.
Xiaomi has priced the Redmi 9 starting at N66, 900 for the 4GB RAM +64GB RAM variant. The phone comes in three colours– Grey, Green and Purple.
Redmi 9C Specifications and Features
While this would be pretty evenly hard to say, there had to be a difference by the way. Though the Redmi 9C features same 6.53” display, it is only a HD+ Display (2340 x 720 pixels) with a waterdrop notch cutout for the selfie camera.
The Redmi 9C is powered by MediaTekHelio G35 chipset with an octa-core CPU and PowerVR GE8320 graphics. This is paired with up to 3GB RAM and 64GB storage with an option to increase the storage by up to 512GB with microSD card. It also runs on the latest MIUI 12 which is based on Android 10.
While the Redmi 9 comes with camera setup akin to the Redmi Note 9, Xiaomi has chosen to go with an iPhone-like boxy arrangement for the Redmi 9C. The phone comes with a triple camera array that consists of a primary 13MP camera with f/1.8 aperture, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. There’s a 5MP selfie camera on the front housed within the waterdrop notch cutout.
Overall, this could have been on point but a 5Megpixel camera for selfies? Your thoughts right now are as good as mine.
For sensors, the Redmi 9C also features a rear fingerprint sensor and is fitted with a 5,000mAh battery which doesn’t support fast charging.
The Redmi 9C is priced starting at N46, 900 for the base variant with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage and N53,900 for the 3GB RAM variant with 64GB storage.
Redmi 9A Specifications and Features
Arguably the last baby of the lineup but the Redmi 9A smartphone still delivers on ‘promise and agreements’.
The Redmi 9A features the same set of display, battery and selfie camera as the Redmi 9C. It is powered by the MediaTekHelio G25 chipset under the hood with octa-core CPU and PowerVR graphics for fair gaming tasks.
The phone also runs on MIUI 12 and features a single 13MP primary camera. However, the catch is that this toddler here can record in 1080p at up to 60FPS which is a major win too.
This device is paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage with an option to expand the storage further by up to 512GB via microSD cards. The smartphone retails at N41,900 for the base variant however, the Redmi 9A doesn’t come with a fingerprint sensor.
Final Verdict and which Redmi 9 Series to Buy
Xiaomi has always pride itself in it’s consistency in offering mid-range and flagship-killer devices and the Redmi Series is no exemption.
However, if you were observant enough(which you really should be when it comes to spending money), you will notice the Redmi 9 lineup specifications and features takes a particular trajectory.
This implies that the base Redmi 9 device is the most valuable of the triumvirate while the Redmi 9C is the least.
In other words, if you are in for something closer to the Redmi Note 9, you might want to go for the base Redmi 9 smartphone. Also, if you find the retail price a little bit over the top and ready to make some camera sacrifices, there is the Redmi 9C which also offers value for money.
However, in all fairness, the Redmi 9A is the real entry-level smartphone here with both its specs and lack of features.
The call is yours to make!
