  • Top 20 mobile phones in India in April 2019: 91mobiles insights
  • “Here are the top devices which users searched for in the month of April”

As per Counterpoint’s report for Q1 2019, Xiaomi continued to maintain its dominance in the Indian smartphone market. But it was Vivo’s rapid rise that took everyone by surprise, not to mention Realme’s growth, which is impressive considering the brand came into existence just a year ago. Interestingly, this corresponds with the list of phones users are searching for the most on 91mobiles. That’s why we continue making month-on-month comparisons of handsets that rank high on the popularity charts. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the most popular mobile phones in India in April 2019.

    Top 5

The Redmi Note 7 Pro (review) continues to sit on the throne, but what’s noticeable is the fact that its direct rival – the Realme 3 Pro – is right behind it, seated at the second spot. The Samsung Galaxy A50 (review), Galaxy M30 (review) and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 have slipped a position each to land at the third, fourth and fifth seating, respectively.

    The complete list

The minor shuffling in positions along with the presence of new entrants means that the list of top 20 mobile phones in April looks quite different from the list we drew up in March. So here’s the full chart to see which smartphones piqued user interest, and those which waned in popularity.

    Hits and misses

    New entrants

    Realme 3 Pro: 2nd position

Considering the past trends for Realme’s Pro series, it’s not a surprise to see the Realme 3 Pro (review) making a stunning debut at second position. And that’s not without good reason, as the 6.3-incher packs impressive specs, including Snapdragon 710 SoC, 4GB / 6GB RAM, 16MP + 5MP dual rear cameras, a 25-megapixel selfie shooter and a 4,045mAh battery with VOOC 3.0 fast charging support.

    Xiaomi Redmi Y3: 7th position

The third-gen offering in Xiaomi’s selfie-centric Y series aims to be more than a one-trick pony. And its spec sheet and our review prove that. The handset features a best-in-class 32MP sensor up front, and draws power from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 632 octa-core silicon. The device is fuelled by a strong 4,000mAh cell.

    Samsung Galaxy A70: 8th position

The largest smartphone from Samsung’s stables – the Galaxy A70 (review) packs in powerful hardware. Under the hood, the 6.7-inch panel-toting phone ships with the Snapdragon 675 chip which is paired with 6 gigs of RAM. For imaging, the phone gets a triple camera-setup on the back, comprising a 32MP shooter, an 8MP wide-angle snapper and a 5MP depth sensor. A capacious 4,500mAh fuels the package.

    Samsung Galaxy A10: 16th position

It’s interesting to see that almost all the devices in Samsung’s refreshed A series have found a place in our list of the top 20 mobile phones in India. The A10 is the most affordable smartphone in the Galaxy A lineup and sports a 6.2-inch dewdrop notch-toting HD+ screen. Powering the show is the Exynos 7884 octa-core chip, which is mated to 2GB RAM.

    Samsung Galaxy M20 64GB: 17th position

Of late, we haven’t seen multiple variants of the same device getting adulation from consumers and thus ranking high on popularity charts, but Samsung’s M20 (review) is breaking that trend. While its base model is placed at the 10th position, the higher-end 64GB edition has also made its debut among the top 20 mobile phones in India in April 2019. Apart from having twice the storage and 4GB of RAM, the smartphone shares its specs with the base version.

    Trend analysis

Samsung increases its lead over Xiaomi

No of devices by brands in the top 20 list in April 2019

Samsung has made a comeback, and how. While the brand is still behind Xiaomi in terms of shipments, the Chaebol is making the right moves to counter the threat presented by Chinese companies. It has as much as eight smartphones in the top 20 list, and what’s even more interesting is the fact that these devices range from the budget segment to the upper mid-range category. Worth noting that if we combine Samsung and Xiaomi, the duo dominates the popularity charts with 75 percent of devices carrying the label of one of these brands. That also inevitably means there are just five brands represented in the top 20 chart – the lowest number in a long time.

The upper mid-tier segment has started seeing some action

No of devices in different price bands in the top 20 list in April 2019

Facing pricing pressure from the affordable sub-Rs 20k smartphones and flagship-grade capabilities from premium devices, the Rs 20k to 30k price band doesn’t usually see much action. But that’s not really the case anymore. As many as four smartphones in the list are priced in this bracket, though of course, the 10k-20k category continues to be the most popular with 11 offerings present in the top 20 chart.

With the ongoing month expected to witness power-packed launches in the form of the Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL, OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro, nubia Red Magic 3 and more, it’d surely be interesting to see which of them are able to make a mark among consumers. As always, we’d be analysing that and more next month. Watch this space.
