    Samsung has officially announced the oft-rumoured Galaxy M40 (first impressions) smartphone in India. The mid-ranger will compete with devices such as the Redmi Note 7 Pro (review), Realme 3 Pro (review) and others in that price range. The South Korean brand has released several budget phones in the country in a bid to gain back market share from Chinese brands like Xiaomi, OPPO, Honor, and Realme. So how does the brand’s latest offering help in achieving that? Well, let’s find as we are going to compare the new Galaxy M40 with the current champion of budget smartphones, the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

    The Galaxy M40 from Samsung is priced at Rs 19,990 for the base variant, which comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage onboard. It will be available in Seawater Blue and Midnight Blue colour options.

    The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, on the other hand, is priced quite aggressively. The base variant, which comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage, is priced at Rs 13,999. If you want more RAM and storage, then the 6GB+128GB version will cost you Rs 16,999. The Note 7 Pro comes in Nebula Red, Space Black, and Neptune Blue hues.

    In the specifications department, there are a couple of differences between the Samsung Galaxy M40 and the Redmi Note 7 Pro. However, both the phones are powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chipset, which means that you should get similar performance. The phones also come with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. If you want to add more storage, you have the option to add a microSD card as well.

    Coming to the design of the phones, the Redmi Note 7 Pro has a U-shaped notch at the front, while the Galaxy M40 uses a punch-hole placed on the left top corner of its screen. Both devices feature a 6.3-inch FHD+ LCD display. At the back, the phones feature gradient finishes and a fingerprint scanner. From the front, the punch-hole design looks better than the notch on the Redmi phone. However, the Redmi Note 7 Pro feels more premium due to its glass-sandwich design. 

    Both the devices feature a vertical camera setup at the back. On one hand, the Galaxy M40 has a triple-rear camera setup, whereas the Redmi Note 7 Pro features dual cameras at the back. The Note 7 Pro gets a powerful 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor at the back, which is paired with a 5-megapixel depth unit. Although the Galaxy M40 gets more cameras. Its main camera is a 32MP sensor., which is paired with an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 5MP depth sensor. For selfies, the Redmi phone has a 13-megapixel shooter when compared to the higher resolution 16-megapixel sensor on the Galaxy M40.

    The camera performance on both devices should be similar, but you do get an extra ultra-wide camera on the Galaxy M40. The Samsung phone has a smaller 3,500mAh battery, while the Note 7 Pro houses a 4,000mAh cell. Both of them offer fast charging support, but the Redmi phone will easily last you longer on a single charge. It also gets a 3.5mm headphone socket. Both devices run custom UIs that are based on Android 9.0 Pie. 

    Bottomline 

    The Samsung Galaxy M40 and Redmi Note 7 Pro offer similar specifications in terms of their processors and displays. While the Xiaomi phone has a larger battery, the Galaxy M40 comes with an additional ultra-wide lens on the back and features a higher-res selfie camera. In terms of price, we believe that the Redmi Note 7 Pro offers more value for money.
