“The Apple iPhone 11 launch invite states ‘By innovation only’, which is being read as a hint on the rumoured camera innovations”
Apple has officially announced the date for its iPhone 11 launch event, which is now confirmed to take place on September 10th, at 10am Pacific Time (10:30pm IST). The iPhone 11 launch event date for 2019 is in line with Apple’s annual launch schedule, which typically takes place in the second week of September. Alongside the new iPhones, the event is also expected to see the launch of the new Apple Watch Series 5. Three iPhone variants are expected this year, like the past couple of years. The three devices have so far been referred to in leaks and rumours as the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, which are slated to succeed the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, respectively.
Beginning with the iPhone 11, this is expected to be the entry point to Apple’s newest iPhones for the year, and in essence, be the successor to the ‘less expensive’ iPhone XR of 2018. As a result, the iPhone 11 will likely come with a 5.8-inch LCD display, since the display type and size for the iPhone XR successor are expected to remain the same in 2019. The presence of the Apple A13 SoC is confirmed in any case, while storage variants are likely to begin from 64GB.
Perhaps the biggest area of contention around the iPhone 11 is in the camera department. Earlier leaks had suggested that the iPhone XR successor would feature a dual-rear camera, upgraded from the single camera unit on the XR. However, many of the newer leaks have touted the iPhone 11 to feature three rear cameras, arranged in a massive hump on the rear side. It is quite likely that, given the iPhone 11 getting possible ‘Pro’ variants this year, the triple camera would be reserved for only those select variants. This is one factor that we will be keeping a keen eye out for at Apple’s September 10th launch event.
The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are expected to be the de facto flagships of the year. The 2019 iPhones are touted to feature triple rear camera setups, with a 12-megapixel wide angle unit, a 12-megapixel telephoto unit, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle unit working in unison. The square hump on the back has been a bit of a controversy so far, portraying an ungainly design language that is highly unlike Apple.
The iPhone 11 lineup of 2019 is also expected to drop the 3D Touch feature, and other possible changes include larger batteries and an upgraded front camera — from 7-megapixel to 12-megapixel. Apart from these features, the launch invite shows the Apple logo in multiple colours — green, blue, yellow, red and purple. It is likely that alongside the standard white, silver, rose gold, black and space grey from Apple’s stable, the iPhone 11 may come with new colours such as green and purple, to make matters a little more interesting. A very recent leak also suggested a move from Lightning port to USB-C, which would be much welcomed by everyone.
The secondary launch of the iPhone 11 launch event expects the Apple Watch Series 5, which too is believed to be as iterative an upgrade as the iPhones themselves. The Watch Series 5 is rumoured to feature an OLED display, largely similar design, some possible additional health tracking features, and two new case materials — ceramic and titanium. All things considered, the entire list of new features on Apple’s flagship phones and smartwatch seem to be somewhat incremental, all of which we shall see in the flesh, about two weeks from today.
As for the release, Apple will likely bring the iPhone 11 series to the market on September 20th. Moreover, for the first time, it is expected to launch all three models on the same day.
