“Quad-camera setups, displays with high refresh rates, dark mode were among the popular trends on smartphones this year”
2019 is ending and it’s rewind time, so let’s look back at the top smartphone trends of the year. The smartphones introduced in 2019 came with a higher than ever screen-to-body ratio, an array of cameras, a high refresh rate display, fast charging, and much more. We also saw OEMs trying to get rid of the ‘notch’ – which still has left the industry divided – with rotating camera, flip camera mechanism, and whatnot. The in-display fingerprint scanner and USB Type-C charging port found more takers in 2019 than the year before. On the software side of things as well, there were also tons of new developments that changed the way we used to interact with our smartphones. So without any further ado, let’s begin with our list trends that defined the smartphones of 2019.
Top 5 trends that defined smartphones in 2019
-
Punch-hole display
The punch-hole display was the face of many smartphones this year, and it's likely to spill over next year to OnePlus 8 and other smartphones launching in the first half. Unlike the waterdrop notch and pop-up selfie camera, the punch-hole display comes with a small circular or pill-shaped cut-out within the screen for selfie cameras. This gives an uninterrupted and immersive viewing experience, as the punch-hole becomes part of the screen. Due credit to Samsung for making the punch-hole display popular with its Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series.

64MP and 48MP cameras
The next popular thing in smartphones of 2019 was the higher megapixel count. It started with 48-megapixel sensors announced by Sony and Samsung, which companies like Xiaomi, Realme, OnePlus, and many others have used quite extensively. The trend then shifted to Samsung's GW1 sensor with 64MP resolution, with Realme XT becoming the world's first smartphone with 64MP camera. It was quickly followed by Redmi Note 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A70s, Realme X2 Pro, Realme X2, and more. The next megapixel battle will be using 108MP and 144MP sensors as cannon fodder.
-
Quad rear cameras
Smartphones with quad rear cameras became commonplace in 2019. In no time, we've seen smartphones across categories being introduced with the array of sensors. Each sensor has a part to play, enhancing the ways smartphone users capture the world around them. While it varies, most quad-camera phones out there feature a primary sensor, a secondary depth-sensing telephoto lens with optical zoom, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a macro lens to capture the subjects unusually close to the cameras.
-
Dark Mode
Dark Mode was a common string on the custom software on this year's smartphones. It is easy on eyes in dimly-lit environments and helps in reducing the battery consumption of the device too. The feature enhances images, text, and colour adjustments for day and night environments. Dark Mode comes built-in on Android 10 and iOS 13-powered devices. OEMs, meanwhile, has also added the feature on their respective custom Android skin, including MIUI 11, One UI 2.0, and ColorOS 7.

90Hz displays
Displays with high refresh rate was also the major selling point of 2019 smartphones. It all started with OnePlus introducing its OnePlus 7 series with 90Hz display, up from the conventional 60Hz screens. The high refresh rate improves the overall user experience, with smoother scrolling and better animations. The technology is yet to be introduced in budget and affordable offerings, but it was selling like hot pancakes on smartphones in the mid-range segment.
Some of these features are likely to be picked up in 2020 – at least on smartphones launching in the first half. OEMs, meanwhile, will continue to surprise us with new technologies and design. Let us know in the comment section below what you expect from the smartphones in 2020?
