COVID-19 contact-tracing app Aarogya Setu has been launched for JioPhone. The app was earlier exclusive to smartphones, but as reported by Reuters, a new version has been rolled out for five million JioPhone users. The reach will be further expanded to other users in the coming days as the government is trying to promote the use of Aarogya Setu app. “The endeavour of the government is to ensure that everyone is safe and everyone who has a phone on which the app can be installed, should be able to get it,” Abhishek Singh President and Chief Executive Officer of National e-Governance Division (NeGD) told PTI.
The app uses Bluetooth and GPS to inform users if they come in contact with any person infected by the COVID-19 coronavirus that has caused the government to announce a nation-wide lockdown since late March. While the app is said to have privacy issues, the government has assured that it’s safe and secure to use.
“No personal information of any user has been proven to be at risk by this ethical hacker. We are continuously testing and upgrading our systems. Team Aarogya Setu assures everyone that no data or security breach has been identified,” the government said in a statement when French security researcher Robert Baptiste claimed that to have found a security flaw in the Aarogya Setu app.
The Aarogya Setu app has added nearly 10.19 crore users so far. It has been made mandatory for both government and private employees, who have to self-assess themselves before reaching office. There are also reports that the app will soon come pre-installed on all the upcoming smartphones.
