Apple Inc. has been awarded the patent to introduce a feature which gives iOS users the ability to take selfies remotely.
This comes into play after social became the norm for individuals to be able to go about some of their daily activities given that we still don’t have a cure for Covid-19.
That means no more going out for sight seeing on Elegushi Beach or partying on the island, and hence, no selfies with folks and work colleagues.
But Apple seems to have found a solution…
The company has apparently been awarded a patent for synthetic selfies which entails developing a method of taking group selfies, without the people actually being present in the same frame.
This means that individuals can still take those realistic group selfies in their own remote location, have fun while staying true to government guildelines.
How could Apple do this?
The idea is to essentially composite the people together in one frame, but also give each of the group selfie members an opportunity to reposition the people in the shot.
These photos could include recorded or live-streamed video as well, with the participants being able to put themselves in the centre.
Users could also be afforded the luxury to make other minor changes like; add fake backgrounds, make changes to skin color, etc.
Son, are we not talking Photoshop editing here??!!
When are we expecting this feature?
As exciting as this may sound, the company has only just earned the patent for the technology but is not yet part of an immediate product plan.
Maybe not in this production year when sales are increasingly plummetting with users also complaining of a green tilt issue to the iPhone 11 smartphone.
Also, bearing in mind that Apple already has far too many patents under its belt, but not all of them have been implemented in user-centric devices. Many have reportedly fallen by the way side or abandoned entirely.
Additionally, Apple had applied for the patent in 2018, way before the current pandemic even came into existence, so its important to note that this feature isn’t a response to the current situation.
However, it would definitely change the way we take group selfies and who knows, especially assuming the virus comes to live with humans.
While this feature may not have been designed for the pandemic, it is something that would definitely be a big plus to have in modern times and a little tilt further to the advancement of Artificial Intelligence.
