Xiaomi has unveiled the successor to its Redmi Y2 (review) affordable selfie oriented smartphone. The new Redmi Y3 (review) has been announced at a starting price of Rs 9,999, which comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. The phone is once again aimed at the selfie enthusiasts of the nation and features a 32-megapixel sensor at front. In this post, we are going to look at all the new features of the Redmi Y3. We will be comparing it to the older Redmi Y2 to see the differences in design, hardware, and more.
Design
First and foremost, we have to talk about the changes in design. Compared to the older Redmi Y2, which featured a metal unibody design and thick bezels all around, the new Redmi Y3 has incorporated a lot of changes. The phone is no longer using metal and instead gets a plastic back with a gradient finish, which looks much better than the older device. The Redmi Y3 also has thinner bezels and a teardrop notch. The front of the phone is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.
Display
The Redmi Y3 has a slightly larger 6.26-inch HD+ display, which gives it a resolution of 720 x 1,520 pixels. On the other hand, the Redmi Y2 has a 5.99-inch display with HD resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. Although, the difference in resolution isn’t that much, the Redmi Y3 has higher contrast ratio and 84 percent NTSC colour gamut. The display is also more immersive thanks to the slim bezels all around, which provides a screen-to-body ratio of 86.83 percent. Both phones have features such as colour temperature adjustment, reading mode, sunlight mode, and standard display.
Hardware
Coming to the hardware, the Redmi Y3 features a newer processor, but it isn’t really a huge upgrade from the older phone. It features a Snapdragon 632 chipset, which is paired with the Adreno 506 GPU. The Redmi Y2 featured a Snapdragon 625 processor, which also had the Adreno 506 GPU. In terms of gaming performance, you will probably not see a lot of difference between the two. This is the only area that Xiaomi neglected. Both phones come with either 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM or 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM. Storage can be expanded via the microSD card slot. Both devices also feature a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm headphone jack, dual-SIM support, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, and other standard connectivity features.
Cameras
In the camera department, there are a lot of changes, with some new hardware. As mentioned in the beginning, the Redmi Y series is dedicatedly for selfie smartphones. Therefore, the new phone comes with a 32-megapixel sensor at the front. That’s twice the resolution of the selfie camera on the older phone, which had a 16-megapixel unit. However, the new phone does miss out on the selfie flash that was present on the Redmi Y2. You do get a lot of new software features though, including Electronic Image Stabilisation. On the back, the primary camera on both phones remain the same at 12-megapixels. The secondary depth sensor on the Redmi Y2 has a higher 5-megapixel resolution, compared to the 2-megapixel unit on the new phone.
Software and Battery
The Redmi Y3 sees a big improvement in battery size. It features a 4,000mAh battery, compared to the smaller 3,080mAh unit on the Redmi Y2. However, Xiaomi has still not included a fast charging tech and the phone only supports a maximum of 10W charging. Nevertheless, the battery life on the new phone should be better than its predecessor. Coming to the software, the new phones comes with MIUI 10 based on Android 9.0 Pie, whereas the Redmi Y2 is still running Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI skin.
