  • No notch! Xiaomi shows off third-generation in-display selfie camera tech
  • Highlights
    • Xiaomi has shown off the 3rd generation under-display camera technology
    • The phone is fast in unlocking and offered a complete notch-free viewing experience
    • Xiaomi is planning to put the technology in mass production next year

Xiaomi first demoed its in-screen camera technology back in June 2019. The tech allowed the phone to unlock at the same speed that we are used to and the quality of the selfies seemed decent. However, the company didn’t reveal much about the technology back then. Now, Shou Zi Chew, President – Xiaomi International, has shown off the 3rd generation under-display camera technology in a quest to achieve a complete full-screen design. While the hardware changes are scarce at the moment, the phone seems to be adequately fast in unlocking the phone and it offered a complete notch-free viewing experience.

Furthermore, the selfie sensor isn’t visible on other screens as well, meaning it doesn’t distract or coming in way while scrolling or watching videos. The image quality clicked from the camera seems to have been improved from the previous generation, but we will reserve judgement for now. The company has announced that it is planning to put the technology in mass production next year, meaning we may finally get full-screen phones sometime in 2021.

Apart from Xiaomi, OPPO had demoed a similar technology last year, but it is yet to launch a commercial phone with the design. The company said it used a customised camera module with an enhanced translucent panel material combined with advanced processing algorithms that don’t require a notch or pop-up mechanism.
