Back in March last year, we learned that WhatsApp had started testing a new dark theme for Android users. The Facebook-owned messenger, which boasts of over 1.5 Billion monthly active users as of early 2018, kept dropping hints of the upcoming dark theme all the way until late last year in November. Over the last couple of months, other apps from Facebook, including Messenger and Instagram, received dark themes on Android. However, WhatsApp's dark theme was still nowhere to be seen. While we did manage to force enable Dark Mode in WhatsApp on some devices running Android 10, there was no official solution from the app. Finally, after months of waiting, WhatsApp is now rolling out a dark theme with the latest beta release.
As per a recent report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp recently submitted a new update (v.2.20.13) through the Google Play Beta Program which includes a new dark theme. If you're on the beta channel, you can enable the new dark theme by jumping into the app settings, tapping on chats, and then selecting the Dark option within the Theme section.
Once enabled, the dark theme shifts every color in the app's UI to a darker shade, however, it isn't completely black. While the greens remain the same color, the whites are shifted to a dark gray and the font goes from black to white. The chat boxes, which were previously white and green in color, are now dark gray and a darker shade of green.
If you're a WhatsApp beta tester, you can get the latest beta update from the Play Store right away and enjoy the new dark theme. But if you aren't enrolled in the beta program, you can join it from the app's Play Store listing. In case you still don't receive the update, you can download the latest WhatsApp beta APK from the link below and sideload the app on your phone.
