Xiaomi India confirms next MIUI update will remove banned Chinese apps

Xiaomi has finally addressed the issue of the removal of banned Chinese apps — including its Mi Browser, Mi Video call, and Mi Community — on its devices. These apps will be removed from its devices in India with the upcoming MIUI update, Xiaomi officially confirmed via its account on Twitter. The company is working on a new version of its upcoming Android custom skin MIUI, which will not include any of the blocked apps. The new version will roll out in a phased manner over the next few weeks and is said to come pre-installed on the new and upcoming smartphones from Xiaomi.

“We’re developing a new version of MIUI that will be built without the pre-installation of any of the blocked apps,” said Xiaomi in its letter to the fans. Since developing the software, testing it, and deploying it to smartphones is a time-consuming process, you may have to wait a little for the update to reach your phone.

The parent company of Redmi and POCO also clarified that its MIUI Cleaner app on its phones is different from the Clean Master app that has been banned by the Indian government citing security issues. “MIUI has its own Cleaner app and we are not using the blocked Clean Master app. Since this might be confusing, we are removing these definitions from the updated MIUI Cleaner app,” said Xiaomi. “Users can also manually update the Cleaner app in Settings by going to System Apps Updater on their smartphones,” it added.

Xiaomi India added that it’s complying with the data and security requirements as defined by the Indian government and storing data of all its users locally in India and “none of this is shared with anyone outside of India.”
